THE
BACKPACK
THERMALARC
Developed for use by police, special
forces and similar organisations, the Back Pack is a single-cylinder
unit which is easily portable over long distances, and which provides
a rapid cutting capability over a limited duration.
The Back Pack consists of a single 9 litre oxygen carbon fibre cylinder,
charged to a pressure of 3000lbs psi (207 Bar). Two guages give cylinder
pressure and working pressure, and an adjustable pressure regulator
reduces H.P. cylinder pressure to a working pressure of 250 - 350 psi
as required.
A 3-way valve allows working pressure to be switched on and off, and
a further vent position drains the cutting cable of oxygen whilst switching
the set off, thus killing the flame quickly. A small safety valve set
at 450lbs, protects the low pressure side of the system, and also prevents
over-pressure of the 'Kerie' cable.
The cable, which is supplied in 12ft. and 25ft. lengths, consists of
a number of high tensile steel wires laid up to form a wire rope, then
covered in a plastic skin to contain the oxygen flow. The centre of
the wire is hollow, allowing a good fast passage of oxygen to feed the
combustion at the tip. The cable consumes at 2ft per minute, and as
the Back Pack operates for a maximum of 12 minutes no more than 25ft
of cable is required.
