DOWN
The Mowbray Door Down unit has been
developed to enable police personnel to overcome the access problems
encountered in hostile situations such as opposed searches or sieges.
Simple to deploy and operate, the MDD unit has a more powerful access
capability than the standard manual ram, and operates more rapidly than
hydraulic breaching equipment.
Using the MDD unit it is possible to gain entry rapidly, even through
barricaded doors, enabling a team to gain access at the moment of breaching
while minimising risk to the occupants of the property - a consideration
particularly vital when hostages are involved. The MDD unit achieves
this by launching a water-filled plastic container at a velocity sufficient
to breach the door, with the accumulated kinetic energy being instantly
and safetly dissipated upon impact.
Propulsion is by compressed air, with the rear of the MDD's smooth-bore
launcher being divided into an air reservoir separated from the main
launcher by an entrapped glass disc. This disc ruptures by electric
detonation at a given pressure, thus applying instantaneous pressure
to the rear of the projectile. A loose piston prevents any leakage of
air past the projectile, giving good velocity at pressures of up to
250 psi.
The complete system comprises 1 MDD unit, 6 glass burst discs, 6 containers,
1 piston, 1 H.P. air cylinder and control box, all stored in a strong
wooden box. The system is easily transportable in a helicopter or a
patrol car. It can be carried comfortably by a two-man team and is compact
enough to pass through any standard doorway.
