THE
Round
Irritant Personnel
12 gauge ammunition long range round irritant personnel
rounds should only be used in Magnum shotguns. Use smooth (unchoked) barrels
with a 3" (76mm) chamber length, nitro-proofed for Magnum loads to
a service pressure of 4 tons per square inch (1200 kg. per sq. cm). All
cartridge cases are 'see-through' for identification.
LONGRANGE
Designed for situations in which close
approach to the target is not possible, the Long Range Round Irritant Personnel is a semi-solid
slug which can be delivered from a safe distance, and which breaks up
after penetrating the target, releasing an airborne irritant.
The 12-bore cartridge case contains a mixture of C.S.M. (C.S. Micronised),
an inert powder for additional weight and a further non-toxic powder
which, under the effects of compression and friction, produces a rapidly
expanding cloud of carbon dioxide when penetrating the target.
The jacketed lightweight Round Irritant Personnel Round is effective up to 35 metres,
and at that distance can penetrate a double glazed window unit, allowing
cloud dispersion to take place. Both long range Round Irritant Personnel Live and Round Irritant Personnel
Practice Rounds can penetrate and deflate tyres at 15 metres and penetrate
vehicle windows and bodywork at 30 metres. The shorter the range, the
more forceful the penetration. Unlike most other ammunition, the Round Irritant Personnel
Practice Round exactly imitates the live round except for the irritant.
It can therefore be utilised realistically in exercises without causing
distress.
